Gunfire Leaves Two Dead at Rhode Island High School Hockey Game
Authorities identified the suspect as Robert Dorgan, 56, who allegedly shot and killed his ex-wife, Rhonda, and adult son, Aiden, inside Dennis M. Lynch Arena on Monday afternoon while relatives gathered to watch Dorgan's youngest son compete in a hockey match. Rhonda was pronounced dead at the scene, while Aiden was transported to a nearby hospital, where he later succumbed to his wounds.
Three additional victims — Rhonda's parents, Gerald and Linda, along with a family friend — were also struck by gunfire and remain hospitalized in critical condition.
Pawtucket Police Chief Tina Goncalves disclosed at a Tuesday press conference that Dorgan had been presenting as a woman at the time of the attack. "It appeared that the suspect was in female clothes yesterday," Goncalves said. She further revealed that Dorgan went by alternate identities: "We've also learned that the suspect does use the names Roberta, Roberta Dorgan, and also Esposito," said Goncalves, noting that the suspect's legal name is Robert.
Three bystanders intervened, attempting to physically restrain Dorgan in the arena stands. He nonetheless produced a second firearm before dying from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Investigators confirmed both weapons had been legally purchased by Dorgan.
Chief Goncalves characterized the violence as deliberate and family-centered. "This was a targeted event. It looked like a family dispute, and there was one individual who was a family friend," said Goncalves.
The FBI has joined local law enforcement to establish a motive. Investigators noted no prior recorded history of domestic violence involving the family.
In a public statement, Dorgan's family expressed grief over the tragedy. "We are all deeply and profoundly affected by the recent events that took place at the Dennis M. Lynch Arena," the family said. "We are reminded that behind every headline is a family experiencing profound pain and loss." They added: "We care greatly for all families impacted by this recent tragedy and our thoughts are with them."
